Rod Armstrong completed trade qualifications in Automotive Engineering (motor mechanic) in 2000, specialising in engine rebuilding and engine management diagnostics.

 

2002 saw the opportunity to gain vessel engineering sea time and complete DCV engineering qualifications. This enable Rod to become Chief engineer on a 35mtr offshore vessel working within the Great Barrier Reef.

 

Over the next 8 years saw work on various vessels, within the Great Barrier Reef, as Chief Engineer. Until becoming Operations Manager / Fleet Engineer for a fleet of 4 vessels. Duties within this role included:

 

  • Development of company training documents.

  • Ensure all operations comply with national standards/ Act and Regulations

  • Development of a company SMS

  • Maintaining rosters for up to 60 staff and all other HR duties

  • Return to work officer (Work Cover)

  • Training of vessel Engineers

  • Superintendent for all vessels during out of water maintenance

  • Provide advice on major infrastructure modifications and purchases to a board of Directors and Share holders

  • Set Budgets and maintain expenditure for day to day, and major maintenance works

  • Overseeing the accounts of a Marine Tourism business and reporting to a board of Directors

  • Maintaining business relationships with key clientele

  • Provide local business advice to a board of Directors located overseas

 

From 2010 Rod has been employed as the Fleet Superintendent / Fleet Engineer and Compliance Manager for a company with a fleet of 9 vessels. Job duties included:

 

  • Training and support for Maintenance team and Engineers.

  • Develop Maintenance systems and Technical manuals.

  • Provide advice on major infrastructure modifications and purchases.

  • Hire of sub contractors and ensure quality control.

  • Set Budgets and maintain expenditure for day to day, and major maintenance works.

  • Superintendent for vessel out of water maintenance

  • Bring the fleet of vessel’s into Survey (NSCV) and change of class, area of operation ‘C’ to ‘B’

  • Draft and implement Safety Management system to 26mtr tug boat to NSCV part E

  • Draft and implement Safety Management system to fleet of 30mtr fast ferry’s to NSCV part E

  • Vessel Engineer on extended charters

  • Carry out engine rebuilding as part of a planed maintenance system 

 

During this time Rod completed a Diploma in Marine Surveying as well as Cert IV in Work Health and Safety. Then gaining accreditation with AMSA as a Commercial Surveyor.
